![]() Serena Mountain Lodge OverviewThe Serena Mountain Lodge, Mount Kenya, is a “tree hotel” providing views of wildlife, mountains, and the rainforest. Guests enter through a wooden drawbridge to wooden decks above the jungle.
The main lodge is built of logs and timber. The four-storey structure is set on stilts, and has outdoor decks where guests can observe the game, sometimes including elephants, congregating at the waterhole and salt lick below the lodge. The lodge is located 2,195 meters above sea level, on the country’s highest mountain, within a forest reserve, and is about a 2-1/2 hour drive from Nairobi. Guests must pay admission fees to the national park to enter the lodge. Children must be 8 years old or older to stay at the property. Serena Mountain Lodge Rooms: There are 42 cabin-style recently renovated guest rooms, with large windows to take advantage of the views. They have timbered walls and rugs, and the wall-hangings are locally woven. All of the rooms have private bathrooms. The guest rooms are available as single or double rooms. Children (aged 8 or above) and young adults are charged a reduced rate of 50% or 75% depending on whether they share a room with an adult or are on their own. Serena Mountain Lodge Restaurants & Bars: Full board and half-board room rates are available. The dining room is built on stilts overlooking the forest. The menu includes international items, traditional safari cuisine, local dishes, and fresh salads. “Safari dinners” served on the roof of the lodge are also offered. Tea can be served in the forest. There is a bar at the lodge with a fireplace and works by local Kikuyu artists. Serena Mountain Lodge Facilities: The resort will arrange hikes in the forest or on local moorland, and mountain climbing. The hotel hosts climbs of Mount Kenya (lasting about 5 days), led by experienced climbers, which include overnight stays at high-altitude tents or bunkhouses, prepared meals, and transportation down from Lenana Point to a celebratory dinner at the hotel. Night and day game drives are available, and there is a specially constructed “hide” hole near the watering hole (connected by tunnel to the resort), for guests who wish to be closer to the native wildlife. There are trout fishing streams on the mountain. For quieter pastimes, the resort has a variety of books on Africa, as well as board games. The lodge hosts local dancers from time to time. Herbal massages are available, as are beauty treatments. There is an Africana gift boutique. Guests can request laundry services, hot water bottles, hair dryers, and other conveniences from the front desk. The resort has Forex facilities. The resort can accommodate meetings and events, and can provide audio-visual equipment and specialized entertainment and excursion options. The resort has medical back-up and facilities for emergency evacuation. The airstrip is accessible in all weather.
