![]() Rusinga Island Lodge OverviewThe Rusinga Island Lodge on Lake Victoria offers a variety of water sports activities and consists of a small group of cottages with thatched roofs and wooden verandahs. This small resort is in Western Kenya, 80 miles west of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey once camped on the site during their hunt for pre-historic fossils. The lodge is accessible by private charter, or the staff can pick guests up from Kisumu airport, which is 3 hours away from the resort by car and by ferry. (There are daily flights to Kisumu from Nairobi.) Rusinga Island Lodge Rooms: The lodge has a family cottage with two bedrooms, and six smaller cottages. The family cottage has a double room and a twin room. The standard cottages are furnished with either a king-sized bed, or two queen-sized beds. The beds are draped with mosquito netting. The cottages also have a living area and a dressing area. The furniture is comfortable and rustic in style. The en-suite bathrooms have double sinks set in vanities crafted from local wood, and stone-tiled showers. Large shaded verandahs are furnished with comfortable chairs. Rusinga Island Lodge Restaurants & Bars: All meals are provided at the lodge, with a set menu, although the timing is flexible. The lodge has its own organic vegetable garden and fruit trees. Breakfast is generally served on the lawns, and includes fruits, eggs, meats, and pastries. Lunch is also served outside, and consists of soups, salad, bread and fish. Dinner is served in a dining hall, on the jetty, in the gazebo, or around the swimming pool, which has a barbeque area. The room rates include full board, house wine, beer, and soft drinks. Champagne and liquor are available for an extra charge. The resort will try to accommodate dietary requirements or preferences with advance notice. Rusinga Island Lodge Facilities: Activities for guests include water sports on Lake Victoria, and a trip to Mfangano Island, home to ancient rock art in its caves. There are archaeological sites near the resort. Guests can jog, or use mountain bikes to explore the island. Bird watching is popular, and safaris to Ruma National Park can be arranged for an extra charge. Spa treatments can also be arranged for an additional fee. There is a swimming pool. Laundry is included in the room rate. The lodge has its own generator and power inverter. The lodge supports several environmental and social programs in its area. |
