Kiwayu Overview

Kiwayu is an exclusive family-owned lodge resort on the Indian Ocean, in the Kiunga Marine Reserve, about 30 miles north of Lamu Island. This incredibly luxurious beach resort is also near the Boni and Dodori game reserves, but it provides a peaceful retreat away from the hubbub of modern life. Guests stay in small thatched cottages that are open to the water, and dress is informal. A variety of water sports and activities and walking tours are available, or guests can laze away the day on the beach. Guests can take a Safarlink flight from Nairobi via Lamu; the hotel will pick guests up at the Kiwayu airstrip. Guests can also travel from Lamu via speed boat, private air charter, or dhow boat. It really is far away from the madding crowd and ideal for perfect for a real break from fast living.

Kiwayu Rooms:

The resort has 18 thatched cottages, known locally as bandas, along the shore of the ocean. The floors are woven matting, and while the cottages are rustic, there is 24-hour electricity. The rooms have a large bedroom, a dressing area with double sinks, and a shower with solar-heated hot water. The cottages have private verandahs. Guests can lie in a king-sized bed draped in mosquito netting, listening to the waves, or relax in a gently rocking hammock. All of the furniture is locally made, as are the construction materials, providing not only a unique setting, but income for local communities. The neutral tones of natural materials are brightened with colorful textiles used in bedding and pillows. The cottages are not air-conditioned, and there is no television.

For a more private retreat, the property also offers the “Baobabs of Kitangani”, a separate getaway on Kiwayu Island, about 2 km across the bay from the main lodge. This romantic hideaway features a living room and an en-suite bedroom on the beach, with the feeling of a tree house overlooking the water. There is a private beach, and a private staff.

Kiwayu Restaurants & Bars:

The hotel's culinary staff prepares a daily set menu featuring a wide variety of fresh seafood, pasta and salads. The hotel can meet dietary restrictions and provide food for children upon request. There is also a wine cellar.

Kiwayu Facilities:

The property can arrange for a number of activities, including turtle watching (depending on the season), guided walking safaris, boat trips to various local attractions, and snorkeling. Water sports and deep-sea fishing are also available. There is no swimming pool, but there are sheltered areas of the beach for swimming. The resort can arrange for weddings on the beach. The property has mobile phone coverage, and there is Wi-Fi internet access near the main lodge office. The property supports various environmental causes and runs a secondary student sponsorship programme in the village of Mkokoni.

Kiwayu ensure every last detail functions happily and safely, from the impeccable seafood (so fresh even kids are safe to eat sushi), to the vast thatch and wood bandas which line the nigh-perfect kilometre-long beach. With their sand and rattan floors, open-air bathrooms, bedrooms and lounge areas casually interlinked, so you can feel close to your children with out feeling squeezed ; this is the perfect soft cell environment for toddlers. Each day I watched my children from a hammock as they chased waves of pink crabs back into the sea, which is warm, gently shelving, with neither dramatic waves nor tides. One evening I listened to my youngest in conversation with a monkey. We went on picnics to hidden coral islets, spent afternoons deep-sea fishing and rolling down the sand dunes. So while there aren't any Wii's or televisions to distract them, there's a vast amount of simpler activities ; learning to swim, chasing geckos, playing snap with the bartender, Francis Waite. We stayed five nights and wished we'd stayed a week, convinced the two-hour flight from Nairobi was entirely worth it.
