A lovely garden to the rear gives summer diners a quiet outdoor option, or you can sit at the terrace out front and soak up the special atmosphere of Kazimierz. Whilst no match for the gothic grandeur of its elder sibling in the Main Market Square, the interior of Szara Kazimierz exudes comfortable understated classiness – make no mistake; this is a proper restaurant for people who expect proper food.

The European style menu has a slight Scandinavian slant, with particular inventiveness shown in the fish and seafood sections (their fish soup is probably the best in Krakow). Daily specials, posted on the blackboard, are to be recommended, and the cheerful, friendly and knowledgeable staff is happy to assist. The steak is top notch and there is a decent vegetarian option. Perhaps more importantly, Szara Kazimierz has earned a Michelin recommendation three years in a row, and is currently the only Michelin-recognised restaurant in Kazimierz.

But the real surprise at Szara Kazimierz comes when you get the bill: you expect quality to come at a price, but when you see how little you have to pay for what is a genuine food-lovers’ treat, you can fully understand its popularity. To dine in Szara on a warm summer’s evening is to experience the best Krakow has to offer visitors from around the world. Highly recommended.
