Cyrano de Bergerac OverviewThere are many who would argue that, when it comes to fine dining, nothing can beat French cuisine. With this in mind, visitors to Krakow should waste no time in heading to its finest French restaurant: Cyrano de Bergerac. Recommended in the Michelin Guide, no less, this elegant restaurant in the vaulted cellars of a five hundred-year-old townhouse, just off the Main Market Square, has been satisfying discerning palates since 1993.
Entry to the restaurant is from Slawkowska Street, adjacent to the piano bar “Le Fumoir”, which is connected to the restaurant and recommended if you fancy a pre-dinner drink in authentic Art Deco surroundings. Moving downstairs, you enter a vast two-storey high cellar, where the profusion of glimmering candles and white tablecloths against the ancient brickwork bring to mind a medieval banquet.
On the menu at Cyrano de Bergerac you’ll find French Onion Soup, Foie Gras, Duck Carpaccio, Snails and Frogs’ Legs, and that’s just for starters! Main courses include Chateaubriand, Steamed Fillet of Sturgeon, Deer Medallions with Boletus Mushrooms and Cranberry Sauce, and Lamb Chops with Fresh Rosemary and Garlic. You can also enjoy some fine cheeses. A selection of classic desserts including Crème Brulee, Profiteroles, and assorted mousses and sorbets rounds things off nicely.
A quick glance at the wine list reveals that this too is almost exclusively French, ranging from some reasonably priced and perfectly respectable A.O.C. standards up to some heavyweight Grands Crus at suitably grand prices. Make no mistake, this is no restaurant for the impecunious backpacker, but if you want top French food and wine at prices that would make Paris weep, then Cyrano de Bergerac (as the famous names that sprinkle its guestbook will testify) is the place for you in Krakow. |
