Gosciniec Pod Zamkiem OverviewAt Goscieniec Pod Zamkiem, an elegant restaurant on the road between Krakow’s Old Town and historic Jewish district, Kazimierz, you can dine in the shadow of Wawel castle. Here you can taste the many delights of traditional Polish cuisine, stopping for a relaxing meal after your exploration of Wawel Hill, then heading on into the winding medieval city streets.
Goscieniec Pod Zamkiem boasts three rooms, each stylized to match Krakow’s rich historical backdrop. A front room glows with elegance, done up in style with honey-toned hues, old-fashioned chandeliers, sweeping gauzy curtains and richly upholstered dining furniture. A second room, more subdued, contrasts whitewash with dark beams, and is covered with homey knickknacks that match the smooth wood tables and heavy candlesticks. The final room, an arched brick basement, looks like a medieval banquet hall, with portraits on the exposed walls and long banquet tables.
High quality ingredients and traditional recipes mean that you can expect the best of Polish cuisine. True to the region, the fare is rich in meats and sauces, with plenty of savoury soups and sweet desserts to choose from. The menu offers traditional favourites such as cucumber, rye or mushroom soup, to follow up with a sizeable portion of mouth-watering meat dishes such as pork cutlets, chicken Kiev or potato pancakes in goulash. Try tangy breaded camembert in cranberry sauce as a starter, or select from a list of grilled fish, pizzas or dinner-size salads. Top it off with a rich Cracovian cake. The prices, especially for the set breakfast and lunch menus, are very reasonable, he atmosphere is bright, the staff is friendly and competent, and you can even enjoy live jazz music as you dine during weekly concerts. |
