Cherubino

The little dogleg in Tomasza Street, just as it crosses Jana Street, allows some outside seating and proudly calls itself ‘Doubting Thomas’s Yard’. Quiet and shady, it’s an excellent spot for when Krakow’s summer heat becomes too much. Among the handful of businesses that share this little nook just off the Main Square is the perennially popular Cherubino, a top-quality Italian restaurant.

Appearances can be deceptive; from the outside it looks no bigger than a standard shop-width, but upon entering you quickly realise that it is much larger, with a vast space extending off to the left. The décor is quirky and fun, with lots of wood and heavy silver candlesticks. Romantic couples may be charmed by the possibility for dining inside one of the old carriages that grace the interior; larger groups can enjoy lengthy timber banqueting tables.

All the staples of top-notch Italian cuisine are present on the menu, with a pronounced Tuscan character. A beechwood oven adds a special piquancy to grilled meat dishes. Weekdays there is a fixed price lunch menu served until 4 p.m., and there is a special children’s menu available at all times. As well as seasonal variations, the menu also includes a number of classic Polish dishes – a typical feature of Italian restaurants in Poland. A well-stocked and reasonably priced wine list leans heavily towards Italian wines.

In a city where Italian restaurants are outnumbered only by Polish ones, you have to offer something pretty special to be able to stand out from the crowd. Kids love Cherubino; in addition to the obligatory crayons and colouring books, there’s also a whole stable-full of rocking horses to play on. In business since 1993 and very much thriving, Cherubino fully deserves its reputation for fine food served in charming and witty surroundings.
