Useful Malay Phrases

Although majority of Kuala Lumpur locals speak English, it is always good to know a few words to impress them. Whether it is asking a simple question or breaking the ice, we need to connect in order to survive. (Plus at least you get to bargain for discounts with retailers)

Greetings

Selamat pagi = Good Morning

Selamat petang = Good Evening

Selamat malam = Good night

Apa khabar?  = How are you?

Jumpa lagi = See you soon

Selamat tinggal = Goodbye (you are leaving)

Selamat jalan = Goodbye (you are staying)

Selamat maju jaya = Good luck

Minta maaf = Sorry

Terima Kasih = Thank you (to reply to this say "sama-sama" means likewise)

Saya  cinta Kuala Lumpur = I love Kuala Lumpur ( we know you do, so do we)

Teksi = Taxi

Tren = Train

Bas = Bus

Kapal Terbang = Aeroplane

Kapal layar = Sail boat

Kapal = ship

Berapa tambang? = How much is the fare?

Berapa lama perjalanan? – How long is the journey?

Selamat atau tidak? – Is it safe or not?

Food

Makan = Eat / food.

Saya lapar = I am hungry.

Di mana makanan sedap? = Where is good food?

Halal = Muslim killed meat and no pork or alcohol.

 

Dia akan bayar semua. = (while pointing at your friend) He/She is going to pay for everything.

Saya selalu kena bayar. = (while pointing at yourself) I always have to pay.

Satu – One     

Dua – Two          

Tiga – Three        

Empat – Four          

Lima – Five

Enam – Six    

Tujuh – Seven    

 Lapan – Eight     

Sembilan – Nine    

Sepuluh – Ten

 

Multiples

Puluh –  Describes a multiple of ten. Example , Dua puluh satu = 21

Ratus - Describes a multiple of one hundred. Example, Tiga Ratus Satu = 301

Ribu - Describes a multiple of one hundred. Example, Empat Ribu = 4000

Put it all together and you can say, eg. Dua ribu enam ratus dua puluh dua = 2622

Berapa harga ini? = How much is this?

Bos ada diskaun tak ? = Boss got discount or not?

Di mana boleh tukar duit? = Where is the money changer?

Mesin ATM= ATM Machine.

Kad Kredit = Credit card.

Saya Miskin = I am poor (cause people always think tourist have money)

Saya kaya = I am rich (well some tourist have a lot of money and like to show it)

Saya miskin kerana isteri saya = I am poor because of my wife. (just kidding)

Saya kaya kerana isteri saya = I am rich because of my wife. (hmmmm…)

Saya cinta suami saya = I love my husband (seems appropriate to say this here)

Tolong saya = Help me.

Api ! = Fire!

Berhenti = Stop.

Dengar = Listen

Jangan Pandang belakang = Do not look behind (in case you see a ghost behind someone)

Saya tidak paham! = I don’t understand.

Saya tak tahan = I cannot stand it.

Cantik = Beautiful.

Pandai = Smart.

Tua = Old.

Muda = Young.

Di mana Tandas?  = Where is the Toilet?

Saya Gila = I am crazy. 

Dia Gila = He / she is crazy.
