St. Paul's Cathedral Overview

A visiting St. Paul's should make you feel something. Honoured? Probably a little strong. Intimidated? Definitely not, although the building itself is

commanding. Humbled, inspired, respectful are what we'd feel, for sure. If you're wondering why, it's because of the events that have taken place within St. Paul's: Royal weddings, funerals, birthdays. Momentous anniversaries and influential political meetings have all left their mark here. One of the most famous occasions was probably Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana’s wedding in 1981.

Indeed, today’s busy Cathedral, the fourth to grace this particular site since 604 AD, is still of major importance for religious worship. However, it also stands as a man-made symbol of hope and resilience, because the cathedral has, throughout history, been bashed about a bit. The lead architect, Sir Christopher Wren (who is entombed in the crypt beneath), has rebuilt it several times, including when it was partially, but not completely, destroyed during WWII and the Blitz.

However, saving the outstanding feature of St. Paul's till last, one that really pulls in the crowds, is its dome. Bulbous and grey from the outside, a space of acoustic phenomena on the inside known as the Whispering Gallery, is accessible by a series of steps. Once up there, you and a partner can stand at opposing edges of the dome, and whisper into the walls. The sound will travel across the roof to where your partner is standing, and they should be able to hear you clearly. Just remember it's a 'whispering' gallery, not a 'bellowing' gallery; you don't want to deafen your friend/relative.
