Trafalgar Square

Located in the beating heart of central London, Trafalgar Square is emblematic to many Londoners as one of the quintessential centres of the city. A large and open square in the centre of a city of densely packed buildings and winding streets, the square is both a centre for community gatherings, political demonstrations and a public meeting point.
In the centre of it lies Nelsons Column, erected in honour of the Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. At the base of the column prowl four imposing granite lions, on whom visiting tour groups and schoolchildren can often be found sprawling.
The square is popular on warm, sunny days. Not that we're saying that it'll be particularly warm, but the sounds of summer and the fountains at full blast in the summer heat can be a glorious thing. It also often hosts a multitude of cultural events, like Chinese New Year, a Malaysian and Indonesian cultural evening replete with street stalls and the Russian Maslenitsa.
Art is often represented on the four plinths on each corner, and has ranged from the impossible Kate Moss yoga statue to a rocking horse and its jubilant rider.
There are a few great spots around the area - we'd recommend the bar on top of the Trafalgar Hotel for views across the square, the cafes around St Martin in the Fields and The Corinthia Hotel for some excellent afternoon tea.
