Our Local Experts say:
Beer gardens are to pubs what mushy peas are to a good plate of fish and chips; they compliment a boozer with an area of peace away from the gathered rabble indoors - except when the weather's nice and people spill out onto the patio.
During the warmer months in London - yes, they do exist, albeit seldom - there's nothing quite like ordering your drink at the bar with a friend or date and taking it out through the back door and onto the lawn, terrace, patio, whatever the pub provides. A garden is like your own patch of private parkland. You can really appreciate your company and your lunch, especially at somewhere like Camden's Grand Union because it provides customers with their own straw huts which they can hire.
