Tom Aikens
London
Chances are there's a special occasion coming up in your life within the next few months. No? Then maybe there's someone you're seriously trying to impress. No again? Well, at least you'll know about this place for future reference because you'll want to thank us for flagging it up.
Since we've just billed the super-talented Tom Aikens and his flagship restaurant as high up on the list of restaurants to try, you might be wondering, among other things, what the prices are like. Hefty ones. This is definitely a one-stop one-off where you can blow a lot of cash on some exquisite food. What are his credentials? Two Michelin stars at Pied a Terre, another at his previous flagship and an inclusion in Restaurant Magazine's '50 Best' Restaurants in the World. Aikens makes the likes of Jamie Oliver look amateurish.
And, when you see what's on the menu - which is laid out in simple categories of veggie, meat and fish starters followed by their main course equivalents - you'll understand why the prices are what they are. Braised and poached leeks, lobster, or foie gras are all optional starters while a turbot, chorizo baked cod, Romney lamb, piglet and pigeon are all hearty main choices coming in at about £20 each.
Desserts are equally as exquisite - as expected - with the likes of chocolate parfait, a cheese board, and one of the butteriest-sounding desserts in London: the Confit Butternut for £8 and consisting of butternut praline, butternut cake, and butternut ice-cream. There's also some candied beetroot with a Port syrup for a really different slant on dessert.
We cannot stress enough how much rustic luxury Tom Aikens offers. You'll be the envy of all your friends and family to have dined at one of our city's most prestigious French restaurants.
