Lluc Monastery Overview

The Lluc Monastery in Mallorca has been a Christian Sanctuary and place of pilgrimage for over 700 years, although most of the buildings date from the 18th century. This little valley also had religious significance to prehistoric peoples who considered the woods to be sacred, and the Romans named the place lucus, meaning "sacred forest". The sanctuary has deep significance for the people of Mallorca, and has been described by M Costa i Llobera as the domestic shrine for all of Mallorca

Set in a beautiful valley in the Tramuntana Mountains, Lluc Monastery has much to offer the visitor, and you'll need the best part of a day to get maximum value from your visit. If you book early enough - there is great demand - you can stay overnight in the monastery in basic rooms with bathroom en suite. Alternatively, there´s a new camping area nearby at Sa Font Coberta, equipped with cooking facilities, toilets, cold water showers, and an area for disabled people. The old campsite at Margenó is now reserved for caravans, and as a recreational area.

This magnificent mountainous area offers plenty of scope for hikers and cross country cyclists and there are many well marked trails passing through Lluc, which makes a perfect base for these activities.

There´s an interesting museum on the 1st and 2nd floors of the main building, with 8 separate collections of art and artefacts reflecting Mallorcan history. The museum is open daily except Saturdays between 10h00 and 14h00.

Much enjoyment can be had in the tranquility of the botanic garden which makes extensive use of water features and clever planting to create as natural an environment as possible. The garden opens daily 10h00 to 13h00 and 15h00 to 18h00.
