de Mondion is an award winning and a flagship restaurant in Malta exemplifying the major steps that the local gastronomy scene has made over the past decade or so. Located within the gorgeous The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux in Mdina, this roof-top restaurant is situated within a beautifully converted 17th Century Palazzo with simply amazing 180 degree views of Malta.

Kevin Bonello, the highly acclaimed Executive Chef, has been able to set a standard that compares well with any of the top European restaurants and a benchmark for any serious local fine dining establishment. Kevin’s passion has led him to rub shoulders as an active trainee with food gurus such as Marco Pierre White, Charlie Trotter, Eric Fréchon, Norbert Niederkofler and Raymond Blanc. This all relentlessly transpires in his delightful and delicious produce.

Dishes are prepared with only the finest of seasonal produce and the menu necessarily changes according to the season. However, whenever you visit, a read through the leather bound menu immediately shows that you are in for a treat. Current creations include a plate of braised local rabbit leg, shallot and mushroom tart, pan-fried rabbit liver and pumpkin puree and rabbit jus as a starter. An example of a main course dish is the fresh Norwegian halibut, sweet onion tart and steamed potato, carrot and orange puree, asparagus spears and passion fruit sauce. The freshly made desserts include a divine chocolate brownie, bitter chocolate and raspberry parfaits with filo discs millefeuille and amaretto jelly. Presentation is nothing short of fantastic.

The discreet and yet attentive service demonstrates the de Mondion’s team effort in ensuring a memorable dining experience and gives patrons just the right input to thoroughly enjoy the moment. A more recent addition is the climate and humidity regulated wine cellar situated at the back of the restaurant. Here are stored a vast selection of over 250 fine wines.

Views during the summer months are complemented by the ever-present colourful fireworks of the traditional village feasts. An extra perk in an already flawless outing. de Mondion’s prices are as expensive as they can get on the island but regulars swear that it is worth every penny. Even the strictest of local restaurant critics have failed to resist the restaurant’s charms.

The de Mondion Restaurant open for Dinner from Monday to Saturday, from 19:30 hours until 22:30 hours. Restaurant closed on Sundays.
