![]() Fontanella Tea Garden OverviewFontanella is arguably the most popular cafeteria in Malta. And with good reason. The Fontanella Tea Garden has existed for as long as one cares to remember, is situated in the pretty medieval town of Mdina, it offers truly unique sweeping views of Malta and they serve the most delicious cakes and sweets you are likely to come across in a long time.
The actual place is also very charming. Fontanella is perched on Mdina’s bastions and spread out around a central courtyard with some lovely greenery and surrounded by multiple floor levels with incredible panoramas and secluded spaces for tables. Not the most practical layout for its staff, but certainly perfect for Fontanella’s patrons...
Being in Mdina, a magnet for tourists, Fontanella is unsurprisingly chock-a-block throughout the peak seasons. However, it is also a popular retreat for Maltese in winter who drive purposely to Mdina to enjoy an afternoon tea and sweets in the cosy interiors. Fontanella’s delicious cakes come in all varieties including chocolate, apple, apricot and walnut, carrot and many others. If you are after a quick lunch or snack, Fontanella also have great options such as salads and other savoury items including the Maltese traditional cheese cakes.
If visiting and the Fontanella Tea Garden is full, keep in mind that being a cafe the turnover of people is pretty quick, so it should be worth waiting for a table in what today is literally a recognised ritual in Malta.
