A welcome addition to the general lack of refined dining choices in the South of Malta, the Leonardo restaurant defines itself as a fine-casual alternative as it still offers a comfortable and less formal atmosphere to complement the great food. The cuisine is rather original with a blend of local, wider Mediterranean and also Eastern influences to its menu. The dishes at Leonardo change on a seasonal basis to ensure the freshness of the food but, being in Malta’s prime fishing village of Marsaxlokk, you can always rest assured to find the most delicious fresh fish available. A tasty selection of pasta and meat dishes as starters and mains are also always available, not the mention the mouth-watering desserts. With a wine bar and cellar situated within the same Southport Villa premises, it is no surprise that the wine list at Leonardo restaurant is varied with over three hundred wines from every corner of the globe. Leonardo is a great option any time of the year, as during the colder months the elegant interior with the imposing replica of Da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’ gives a refined sense to the whole dining experience. Some patrons also prefer this airconditioned option for some respite from Malta’s sometimes stifling heat in summer. However, it may come as no surprise that the Leonardo restaurant is at its best when sitting outside on its first floor verandha overlooking the idyllic bay with traditional and colourful ‘Luzzu’s (fishing boats) just a stone throw away. You cannot help but imagine that the fish on your plate has just jumped out voluntarily from the sea right into the chef’s hands for you to enjoy!
