Royal Malta Golf Club Overview

Founded in 1888 by Lieutenant-General Sir Henry D’Oyley Torrens KCB KCMG, also responsible for launching the game in South Africa with the Cape Golf Club (predecessor of Royal Cape), as a facility for British servicemen stationed in Malta, The Royal Malta Golf Club is a private member club (visitors are welcome) and part of an exclusive circle of 65 golf clubs in the Commonwealth to have Royal status. The Club’s most renowned Pro is David Llewellyn, who was here between 1978 and 1981, and capped his illustrious career by winning the World title for Wales in 1987.

A mammoth mission to upgrade the overall standard of the 18 hole course was started in 1988 and despite several setbacks, including heavy flooding, the course today is a completed little gem with fairways planted with Bermuda grass, a computerised wall-to-wall watering system, refurbishment of the 50 sand bunkers, re-planting of the tees with TifSport grass and the greens with the state of the art TifEagle grass. This upgrade had ensured The Royal Malta Golf Club’s status as a leading golf course in the Southern Mediterranean.

The Royal Malta Golf Club has been rated as follows by the Council of National Golf Unions (CONGU) and European Golf Association (EGA):

Men Yellow Tees Slope Rating - 117 Course Rating - 67.5

Ladies Red Tees Slope Rating - 120 Course Rating - 69.9

(A golf course of standard relative playing difficulty has a slope rating of 113)

The maximum handicap to golf at the Royal Malta Golf Club is 28 for men and 36 for ladies.

The golf course has some excellent holes from the 441 yard par 4 Hole 1 needing a good first drive and with its greenside bunker catching anything but the perfect shot, to the picturesque par 3 Hole 4 signature hole, known as the Maid’s Bedroom due the tee shot needing to be played over the remains of the old club’s maids house. The 382 yard Hole 11 offers a wide fairway giving the golfer an excellent chance to attack the elevated two-tier green and, at first sight, the last few holes seem to provide a relatively easy finish but a 40 foot wide diagonal ditch running just in front of the green in Hole 15 quickly makes golfers reconsider that opinion.

Other facilities found at The Royal Malta Golf Club include a restaurant, a well equipped Pro Shop and coaching and training facilities managed by the resident Club Professional, Henning Schulze Doering.

Advanced bookings are essential and fees are reasonable, ranging from just EUR 44 for 1 round of 9 holes in low season to EUR 295 for 5 rounds of 18 holes in high season. A full set of branded clubs can be hired for EUR 25 and an electric buggy for EUR 36.
