Victoria's East Coast

Located north-east of Melbourne, Gippsland is one of Victoria’s most unique destinations. Famed for its fresh produce and wineries, it’s also home to stunning beaches, sparkling lakes and lush national parks. Whether you are looking to indulge in fabulous food and wine, relax by the water or get active with a bush-walking or sailing adventure, you’ll not be disappointed with the gorgeous Gippsland region.

Lush Rainforests and National Parks

A cool-temperature rainforest, Tarra Bulga National Park is alive with fern gullies, majestic towering ash trees and cascading waterfalls. Lyrebirds, currawongs, platypuses and wallabies are just a few of the birds and animals that inhabit the region. There are a myriad of walking trails through verdant forest, or you might opt to join a bike or rafting tour. The suspension bridge along the Fern Gully Nature Walk affords spectacular views. While camping is not permitted in the park, there is a range of accommodation including a lovely guesthouse and a Swiss-style chalet.

The Baw Baw National Park is located in the Gippsland high country. Spiralling around Mt Baw Baw, this stunning enclave is perfect for bushwalking, bike riding, bird watching, horse riding and rafting. See beautiful displays of wildflowers in summer and spring, and base yourself here in winter to enjoy a great range of ski trails.

Wilsons Promontory National Park is a striking wilderness region with lush rainforest, rugged mountaintops and beautiful, secluded beaches. The most southern point on the Australian mainland, the ‘prom’ as it’s known to the locals, is a great place to camp or join a bushwalking trip. There’s an abundance of wildlife here, so you might be lucky enough to meet kangaroos, emus, wombats and the beautiful birdlife that call the region home.

Sparkling Lakes and Beaches

The Gippsland is home to the nation’s largest network of lakes and rivers. Lakes Entrance lies at the mouth of the river and lake systems and is a great base from which to explore. Many people opt to make the most of the aquatic terrain on a cruise. Lake Tyers is just one of the picturesque destinations you might travel to. Wilderness areas such as Colquhoun State Forest, Lakes National Park and Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park are ideal spots for fishing, hiking or sitting back and enjoying a picnic lunch in tranquil surrounds.

Along the coast, Ninety Mile Beach is a spectacular stretch of golden sand and cobalt ocean located on Victoria’s east coast. Swimming and long, leisurely walks are in order. Dolphin and whale watching are popular tour options. Or why not enjoy a waterfront dinner of fish and chips by the beach?

Whether you choose to camp under the stars or luxuriate in a resort, there are an abundance of accommodation choices during your stay. National parks are generally well-facilitated, and you’ll find restaurants and cafes at each and every of the villages and small towns in the region. Inland numerous vineyards lie waiting to be discovered on a wine tour.
