Steam Railway

Mornington

Mornington Peninsula Things To Do

Sunday fun on an historic steam train.

Travel from Moorooduc to Mornington Peninsula and back on the K163, a beautifully restored vintage steam locomotive and carriages. Watch the driver, Eric, as he drives the open steam engine and see coal filling the upper large box and water loading into the tank. The coal stokes the fire and the water creates the steam that makes enough pressure to move the engine and carry all the carriages along the 5.6km track.

The train runs on the first three Sundays of every month as well as on public holidays, and offers five return trips each time. It stops along the route at the third of the three stations it passes along the track, Tanti Station. Passengers can either take a return trip, or catch the courtesy bus to Mornington, enjoy a leisurely lunch or snack at the restored café on the station and then ride the train to Moorooduc.

This historic heritage train is operated by the Mornington Railway Preservation Society, a non-profit volunteer organisation. The society not only operates the train, but also restored the train, the track and other railway equipment as well as the station. This restoration project is ongoing and the society is currently renovating other steam and diesel heritage locomotives and passenger cars. Mornington Railway is a listed Heritage railway.

The Mornington Railway Preservation Society (MRPS), which is a not-for-profit incorporated association that manages the MR, was formed in 1984 with the help of volunteers

We have steam and diesel heritage broad-gauge locomotives and heritage passenger cars.
