The October – April period has a few nicknames given to it by those who know and love it. High Season, Winter Season, and Dry Season are just a few. The air has a velvety balminess to it, and when you get off of a plane coming from 20 – 30 °F (-7°C), it’s like stepping into paradise. The average temperature in the winter season is about 70 °F (21.1 °C), with lows going below 60 °F (10 °C) in the evening, but often reaching above 80 °F (26.67°C) during the day. As you can imagine, the winter months are perfect for walking and exploring all that Miami has to offer: It’s an ideal time of year to take advantage of the outdoor entertainment, festivals, and other events scheduled throughout the cooler months.
The warm and moist summer months often produce plenty of sunshine in the morning and early afternoon, but bring thundershowers in the late afternoon. Interestingly, the thunderstorms are welcomed by locals because of the resulting lower air temperatures after the storm passes. Of course, it’s a good idea to have an umbrella handy this time of year for when you’re out running afternoon errands.
This is the time of year when the average ocean water temperatures reach the mid 80s°F (29 °C). This makes it perfect for heading to the beach to swim, snorkel, ride a jet-ski, or enjoy any of the other water sports or activities available. Summer air temperatures are in the 90s °F (29–35 °C) at the hottest point of the day, but on average visitors and residents can expect comfortable evening temperatures in the 70–77 °F (21–25 °C) range.
Generally speaking, South Florida’s prime coastal location, as well as its sea-level elevation, contributes to these desirable weather patterns.
Miami’s weather is remarkably dependable and consistent. The important thing is to bring cool and lightweight clothing so that you are able to take advantage of the outdoor splendor this city offers to visitors year round.
