Hermitage Garden

Hermitage Garden has always been known as an amusement, entertainment centre with theatres, shows, cafes, summer pavilions, pergolas since 1830. Visitors used to enjoy military parades, gipsy choir, and national singers' songs. Shalyapin, Sobinov, Nezhdanova -- great Russian opera singers starred on the garden stage. Famous Russian composer Rakhmaninov conducted the orchestra. Sara Bernar, Maria Yermolova, outstanding actresses, played in the open air performances. Tolstoy and Lenin had a stroll in the garden. So lots of celebrities from different époques liked it a lot and spent their time in Hermitage Garden. In Soviet times Moscovites would play chess, listen to popular actors and poets, watch films in the summer open air cinema.
Now there are three theatres in the garden: Hermitage, Sphere and New Opera, in the winter they open an ice rank and in the summer they assemble a musical stage to host jazz and brass band festivals.
The garden has lindens, oaks, maples, poplars, a lot of lilac, honey suckle, hawthorn shrubberies, roses. So it's a wonderful place to enjoy rich floral aromas and take part in different cultural activities. Currently the garden has become a dedicated events venue; Christmas fair, Pancake weekend and others as well as small family celebrations are regularly arranged there.
