Das Alte Fort

Das Alte Fort Museum was officially opened in 1983 and houses various items of interest from a bygone era. Built by the Schutztruppe in 1896, its location on a hill served the army well in terms of an all-round stunning view with its tower added in 1904. The "Old Fort" was used as a hostel from 1923 up until 1958 before being declared a national monument in 1975. German colonial exhibitions, old tools and utensils including a smithy used to produce ox wagons, Himba cultural items, handmade lace cushions and a mineral collection are just some of the more than 3,000 pieces on display. Step into an era long forgotten and relive history!
