Uis

The settlement of Uis lies near the highest mountain in Namibia, namely the Brandberg. Established as a miners’residence in 1958, tin was mined extensively up until 1991 when the price of tin fell so low that its was uneconomical to continue production. The town slipped into a sleepy phase with only the traffic to and from the Damaraland area keeping it from a permanent slumber. The area remains a geologist’s dream due to its interesting formations and mineral wealth. Local residents still actively dig for minerals and the roads are lined with vendors selling semi-precious stones. With only a few shops and businesses within its midst, the town carries with it an air of nostalgia. As a link between the coast and the stunning vistas of Damaraland, the town holds its own with many beautiful lodges and camps scattered in the area.
