Outjo
Despite its small size, the town of Outjo can be regarded as a gateway to some of the biggest attractions in Namibia; the Etosha National Park located a mere 100km away, Damaraland and the Kaokoland. Also known as an agricultural centre, Outjo caters grandly for all who wish to stay over or are just passing through with quaint shops and fuel stations. Some of its architecture still reflects the German influence that led to its establishment as a military base in 1897. In Herero, the name Outjo means "place of the cone shaped hills", related from its location between low knolls. Interesting sites around the town include the Naulila Monument, the Windmill Tower and the Outjo Museum. Housed in the same building constructed as a home for German Major Franke in 1899, the museum displays beautiful artifacts and old furniture. A collection of gemstones signifies the mineral wealth of Namibia.
