Gamkarab Caves

Used as a source of water by Bushmen and later by a group of Dorslandtrekkers, the Gamkarab Caves also provided sustenance to local wildlife able to reach the water levels deep inside. Fittingly, Gamkarab means "waterhole". The Bushmen had a very specific ritual when gathering water from the caves. Upon descending into the dark depths and proceeding to the edge of the water, the gatherer would say "Gamkarab, I come", and only then would he place his hollowed out ostrich egg into the water. The cave system fans out underwater and researchers are still exploring the myriad of tunnels. With fossils and a few stalagmite and stalactite formations, the caves are intriguing and mysterious.
