Diaz Monument

In January 1486, Diogo Cão planted a cross on the Namibian coastline, paving the way for Bartolomeu Dias to round the Cape of Good Hope 2 years later. Located in the coastal town of Lüderitz, the Dias Monument commemorates the landing of Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. Several other crosses were erected by the Portuguese along the coast to serve as beacons en route to the Cape of Good Hope, but only one other, the one erected by Diogo Cão at Cape Cross north of Henties Bay, has survived the hostile winds and weather of the Atlantic coastline.
