New Zealand Weather

In the main, New Zealand enjoys a temperate climate with mild temperatures, modest rainfall and plenty of sunshine. There’s a noticeable difference between the North and South Islands. Auckland and the northern region of the North Island are sub-tropical with warm, humid summers turning into damp winters. While the South Island is a few degrees cooler, leading into four distinct seasons the further south you go. The temperature lowers from an average of 15°C in the far north down to a 9°C average in the south.  New Zealand's climate is ideal for adventure and leisure activites!

Best Time To Go

The best time to travel to New Zealand is during summer, between November and April. The skiing season typically lasts during the winter months of June to September.

Summer – December to February

The months of December to February bring high temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Average temperatures are 20c – 30c. Days are long and sunny while nights are mild.

Autumn – March to May

The months of March to May are cooler than summer but still provide plenty of warmth and sunshine with many taking to the beaches until April.  Autumn colours that come with the changing leaves add to the beauty of the landscape as you travel the land.

Winter – June to August

The winter months of June to August are not as cold as those in the northern hemisphere. Along with the colder weather, there’s more rainfall to most areas of the North Island.  Along with the snow capped mountains of both Islands, the South Island experiences cooler temperatures.

Spring – September to November

The months of September to November bring generally unsettled weather, with more rain and wind than other seasons. The weather can also range from cold and frosty to warm and hot days.

UV Rays

With far less air pollution than many other countries, New Zealand experiences strong UV rays during the summer months.  Take sensible precaution to avoid sunburn especially when the sun is at its hottest from 11.00am until 4pm. While summer sees the most sunshine, most regions still have a pretty high amount of sunlight during the winter months.

Clothing

New Zealand is a country where the conditions can change pretty quickly in the course a day.  It’s well worth carrying a few layers of clothing that will suit all the elements, whether it’s rain, wind, snow or the warm sunshine. Those cold starts to the day can often turn into glorious hot and sunny days!
