Our Local Experts say:

New Zealand Nightlife is vibrant and colourful, and mainly bar-based, but it's really only in the larger cities of Auckland and Wellington, plus the youth-Mecca of Queenstown, where you'll find much open after midnight.

Nightlife in New Zealand is relaxed and tempered, with a growing late night scene, although non-city centre establishments do tend to close around 11pm. Clubs are confined to the bigger cities, or search out a casino if you're really keen to stay up, but you can usually find somewhere open wherever you are, if you know where to look.
