The Speights Ale House OverviewHeritage Gastro-Pub and brewery in Dunedin, it's a throwback to when meals were hearty and ale was pure. Lovingly restored building with oodles of character, it can get lively but it's all good fun. The long, communal wooden tables in The Speight's Ale House add to the 'bierkeller' atmosphere, but there's nothing spit'n'sawdust about the food, which is good, old-fashioned, belly-filling fare such as Sausage & Mash, Highland Lamb, Pork Ribs and Beef Schnitzel, usually incorporating one or more of James Speight's ales as a 'secret' ingredient. The menu is quite vast, and very meat-based - you can imagine big, burly blokes congregating here a hundred years ago over half a pig and a flagon of beer, putting the world to rights. And who's to say it's changed a whole lot since then. Hurrah.
