Ontario Regional Info

Welcome to the province of Ontario where trendy cities, outdoor adventure, history and culture are abundant.  Ontario sits on four of the five "Great Lakes", the largest group of freshwater lakes in the world.  Imagine a lake so large you can’t see the other side!  Together with 250,000 other lakes, Ontario is responsible for one third of the world’s fresh water supply.  While not the largest province geographically, Ontario is, by far, the most populous.  In fact, approximately 13 million, or one in three Canadians call Ontario "home".  Ontario stretches for 1 million square kilometers.  That’s three times the size of Italy!  So, make sure to leave time to explore this vast wonderland.

Winter, spring, summer or fall – come and call in any season.  While Canada has a reputation as a "northern" country, the weather during the summer months of June through August are usually sunny and hot.  Temperatures in the south may shoot quite high, however the huge northern expanse of the province enjoys a cooler climate.  Those hot summer days are best enjoyed seated in a lakeside "Muskoka chair" with a cool Canadian lager in hand.  Yes, Ontario winters can be cold but when dressed for the weather, enjoying the panorama of the outdoors with the sun shining on the crisp, white snow is truly a spectacular experience.  Autumn is our favourite season as the trees turn to hues of scarlet, rust, crimson and gold.  Savouring the season while the foliage presents nature’s display is a must.

Southern Ontario is a region of diversity.  From cosmopolitan Toronto to the stunning Niagara Falls, from Ottawa, Canada’s capital, through Kingston to the many quaint towns and villages, from the magnificent Niagara Escarpment with its’ pristine waterfalls to the adventure lands of Muskoka and Georgian Bay, from forts and castles to museums and galleries, Ontario has it all.  Live theatre abounds in the big cities and smaller communities with Toronto identified as having one of the top ten best theatre districts in the world.  Make your stay in Ontario an experience you won’t forget by taking in a world-class show or any one of the numerous regional events happening in the province.

Discover Ontario wines!  Ontario boasts Canada’s first grape growing operation with production beginning in 1866. Tour a vineyard in one of our four major growing regions and enjoy sampling one of our award winning wines.  If you have never experienced Ice Wine, you will be thrilled with this taste sensation.  Ice wine is produced from grapes that have squeezed every last day out of the sun and are picked during the frosty early morning hours of a winter’s day.  Until you try it you will not believe that this amount of sweetness is possible.  Purchase one to take home as who doesn’t like sharing that elusive bottle with friends?  And plan your next stay to coincide with the Niagara Ice Wine Festival.

Northern Ontario is the place to get away from the hustle and bustle of life.  Northern Ontario, including Manitoulin Island is known for its rugged landscape, unspoiled nature, and historic ties with the Aboriginals.  Lying on the ancient pink rock of the Canadian Shield and covered with sweeping forests, provincial parks, bays, untouched wilderness and even gemstone mines, Northern Ontario is paradise for any nature-lover.  If fishing, hunting or camping is your thing, you will find it here.  You may spot deer or a bear right by the side of the road or find caribou and moose roaming freely in game preserves.

Visit Sudbury, Sault Ste Marie, Thunder Bay or Timmins, follow the ancient fur trade route or hop on the Polar Bear Express to enjoy the unspoiled vistas.  Why not star gaze in the deep darkness of the open sweep of a northern sky?  Brush off those hiking boots and come enjoy all that Northern Ontario has to offer.
