The festive season is upon us and then some. With Christmas mere days away, you are juggling the last few straggling parties to attend to; last minute purchases and you feel your holiday stress level on the verge of reaching a fever pitch. Perhaps it’s time to start thinking about how to best come down from your holiday high and decompress in the new year before you head back to the doldrums of work. Ontario has a plethora of fabulous towns and cities to explore. You could spend a few blissful nights at Niagara-on-the-lake, wander the exquisite nature reserves of Port Stanley, or dine at some of the nations finest eateries in Toronto. However, if you are really looking to impress the one you love, consider whisking them away to experience the timeless beauty of our nations capital. Toronto may gleam with cosmopolitan modernity, but Ottawa spells romance.
Voted as one of the worlds most livable cities, one is immediately struck by the remarkable gothic-inspired architecture, chic restaurants and bars and the overall laid-back atmosphere the city has on offer. Lucky for you, Ottawa has an exhaustive selection of boutique hotels and B&B’s, but why not seek lavish and luxury, this weekend is special. Begin your escape in style by spoiling your loved one (and yourself) with a weekend stay at the Arc. Modern styling, opulent Egyptian linens and romanesque bathtubs await you. Centrally located, it’s mere steps away from all the romantic things you have planned. After you’ve settled in, consider a quick bite, then head out to partake in an Ottawa tradition, skating the beautiful Rideau Canal. Over 7km long, and a Unesco World Heritage jewel, the Canal Skatway is the worlds largest outdoor skating rink that meanders from the steps of picturesque Parliament Hill through the heart of downtown Ottawa. Snap photos, sip on sumptuous hot cocoa from rink side vendors and steal kisses all the way through the city. This will surely create memories you will be talking about for years to come.
Every romantic escape should include a relaxing spa experience. And there is no better way to ease the tension from the holidays seemingly endless festivities, then to spend a day in ultra luxury at the Nordik Spa, the largest Scandinavian Spa in North America. Go for a dip in the tepid mineral pools, take in natures lullaby and feel all your troubles melt away. Insist on indulging in a Thai massage, or Volcanic Stone treatment and you’ll be out of the doghouse for, well, at least until the next weekend away! Whether you spend the day, or just a few hours, this is the perfect way to spend an afternoon.
Still not romantic enough for you? How about a cozy sleigh ride through the forest, sampling delicious maple syrup along the way? Stanley’s Olde Maple Lane Farm is a truly uniquely Canadian experience. Gliding amidst Maple forests through a winter wonderland just might inspire you to break out in song! If not, at the very least, you’ll be thinking about when you’ll be back to this special place.
After a hard day at the spa, or brisk sleigh ride through a winter wonderland, one must not forget to eat. Ottawa’s fine selection of restaurants is as diverse as it is exciting. Spend your last night dining at a converted Victorian home at the exclusive Beckta. Premium Canadian wines, inventive cuisine and silver style service make for a delightful evening. Or perhaps simple, fresh, seasonal dishes paired with excellent local micro beers, are more what you’re after to celebrate your fabulous escape. The Black Tomato is a local favourite and always busy, so be sure to get there early.
So when the crowds start to be a bit much, and you just don’t think you can stand another moment of crazy Christmas traffic, consider getting away from it all. Put down that knick knack you have in your hand, and take those socks back to the shelf. Wrap up an experience this holiday, and give the gift of Ottawa romance. Trust us, you’ll be thanking us later!
