Weather Overview

Phuket’s weather is very different from that of other main Thai resort destinations – and almost exactly opposite from that of Koh Samui.

Phuket has a tropical monsoonal climate with two distinct seasons - the dry season and the rainy season. In the dry season, the monsoon comes from the northeast and lasts from November through April whereas in the wet season, the winds blow from the southwest. It runs from May to October. April to May and September to October are the hottest times of the year and September to October is also the wettest.

The weather is mild and although heavy rains particularly in September and October can shuffle things around, it's rare that the island has several consecutive days of heavy rain. Oddly, some of the best weather – clear blue skies interspersed with tropical downpours – comes in June/July/August, and that’s when Phuket is at its greenest and most beautiful. But if ‘no rain’ is your thing, avoid the rainy season – but be prepared to pay high season rates.

Mean temperatures: Air – 30-40°C. Sea – 27-31°C

The best time to visit Phuket
The most pleasant months to come to Phuket are from December through March, during the cool northeast monsoon season when it isn't so humid and the cool breezes keep things comfortable and relaxing. The average temperature is around 24C to 32C or 75F to 89F.

The area around Phuket also holds interesting things to do. Phang Nga, Krabi, the Phi Phi Islands and Koh Lanta offer a more quieter atmosphere, but nevertheless hold a wealth of wonders.

Things to do when it's raining
There's no need to be stuck in your hotel room when it's wet outside! Phuket offers a lot of options of things to do so you don't get soaked in a downpour. Take a Thai cooking lesson,  go shopping or visit a museum and discover some of Phuket's rich culture and history.

What to wear in Phuket
Leave your suit and tie, and heavy clothing at home! With the mild climate experienced in the tropics, lightweight, casual clothing is the way to go every time of day. There are no places on Phuket or the surrounding areas that require formal dress. Long trousers are useful during the evenings to protect your legs from mosquito bites, but the best protection is to apply repellent.

What you'll need are items such as a swimsuit, sunglasses, sunscreen, T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, sandals, cotton shirts and dresses, toiletries. And don't forget your camera! You'll want some memories to cherish. If you run out of anything, clothing on the beach and local shopping areas are inexpensive.
