U Pinkasu Restaurant

INTRODUCTION:

U Pinkasu is a Czech restaurant of great renown that dates back through thick and thin to the mid decades of the 19th century. It seems that somehow its fame and longevity was trusted in from the very beginning because there are some really splendid old photos of the place confirming its popularity that must go back one hundred years and more. It was Jakub Pinkas who took a chance on buying a small property here right behind Wenceslas Square and selling the newly produced Plzen beer which he had heard of. The Praguer's loved it from the start and soon he was so busy he bought the neighbouring house as well and things really took off. Today, not too much changed, the exact address is where it has always been and you can quaff the great beer too, but also some really fine dining is to be had too, especially if you love Czech cuisine.

CUISINE AND SPECIALITIES:

While there are many international and familiar dishes on the food menu U Pinkasu is really one of the best opportunities you will have to sample and taste the very best of Czech cuisine according to recipes and preparations that go back to the very early years of the restaurant itself. If you like the challenge of a great piece of succulent meat ask for the colossal Knuckle of Pork that will have you chewing hard and long. Or ask for something more tender perhaps like Roast-loin done in the very imaginative Czech way. Expect great filling Dumpling covered in a thick and very appetizing sauce to accompany many of your dishes. Take on the Beef Tartar which is a real national classic and look out for that raw meat and egg right on top of your plate. Incredible. Before all that there are Cold Starters and Warm Starters to get you going, while if you wish to take it easy a fresh and healthy Salad might be just for you. Additionally Fish Gourmets, vegetarian Dishes, as well as some famously good Desserts are all awaiting your selection. At U Pinkasu you will find all this and much more besides. ATMOSPHERE AND STYLE:

The atmosphere seems to be perpetually jolly here and rather noisy too as city and country people as well as a great number of tourists discover the place, get themselves a seat, and settle down to some great conversations and just as good drinking. In recent years the interior, which had been quite small, has been enlarged considerably and there are three or four rooms over two levels plus one upstairs also for drinking, eating, as well as one which is non-smoking. Out the back is a most wonderfully created outdoor space under the impressive old walls of the massive White Friars church where drinking and eating al fresco can be done underneath the stars. It really is amazing and a lovely experience, but often quite full so be patient while you look for a table.

No day of the year is a closed day at U Pinkasu such is the affection which people have for it. Should you go to the rear of the great Bata department store at Mustek which is the lower end of Wenceslas Square you will find U Pinkasu under the walls of the fine old church there. Reservations can be made to be sure of your place - especially if you are a group - but most people seem to just come along and hope for the best.
