Elevenses in Prague

Places to perfect the art of Sunday brunch

No matter where in the world, everyone appreciates elevenses. Not quite breakfast, nor lunch, but a calculated combination forming the perfect intermediate meal, brunch. However, before lashings of streaky bacon, piles of rich pastries and mounds of fresh fruit float before your eyes, you must realise that there is a particular art to enjoying brunch. Never a meal to be rushed, the best kind of brunch takes place on a Sunday. With work deadlines and truly behind you, and the chaos of Saturday calmed down, this day of rest is the ultimate time to stage a sedentary Sunday brunch.

As a vibrant pulsing city, Prague is no exception to this rule. Bustling with activity, Prague is renowned for its busy old town and the chaotic clusters of musicians, street performers and artists all the way along Charles Bridge. However, on Sunday the pace of life slows right down as people leisurely go about their daily duties, offering the optimum conditions to enjoy the perfect Sunday brunch.

Here at My Destination Prague we take our brunches very seriously. With this in mind, here are some of the best places around Prague where you can tuck into a fantastic Sunday spread….

Hergetova Cihelna : Located in Mala Strana, Prague’s ‘Little Quarter’, Hergetova Cilhelna offers one of the most picturesque places for elevenses. Set beside the scenic Vltava River, you can stare out at views across the Charles Bridge as you munch down your brunch. Choose from a varied selection of meats, fish, salad, vegetables, crepes, fruit and deserts in the warm and chilled buffets. Children’s menus are also available.

Il Giardino Restaurant : Part of the Mövenpick Hotel connected directly by cable car, Il Giardino is a chic place to enjoy Sunday brunch.  A fusion of Italian and Czech cuisines, this restaurant offers a delicious array of salads, tender lamb, grilled prawns, gyros (a meat sandwich) and homemade desserts. Also, boasting a thematic brunch once a month, you can expect to try a range of different cultural cuisines including Swiss and Brazilian buffets.

Zlata Praha Restaurant : Nestled upon the banks of the River Vltava in the exclusive Hotel Intercontinental Prague, Zlatá Praha restaurant serves a soothing buffet to the sounds of live piano music. Wonderfully relaxing, here you can indulge in delicacies from either the a la carte menu or the chilled and warm buffets. Desert comes in the form of decadent cakes, ice cream and summer or winter fruits. A particularly popular spot for brunch, booking in advance is recommended (their Sunday treats are well worth the wait).

SaSaZu restaurant : For a brunch with an Asian twist head to SaSaZu restaurant. Found in the heart of the Holesovice district, SaSaZu offers an eclectic mix of spicy fusion foods conjured up by head chef Shahaf Shabtay. Here amongst the comfortable and intimate setting of sofas, chandeliers and Chinese lanterns, you can sit back and relax, enjoying a truly leisurely Sunday brunch.

So there you have it, a delicious selection of places in Prague where you can unravel the fine art of the Sunday brunch. Now all you need is an incredibly empty stomach, endless stretches of Sunday time, and a gaggle of friends or family all raring to go…. Bon Brunching!
