Prague Taxi Information

In Prague there are a number of taxi firms, and also private operators who offer a transport service throughout the city. One can choose either a TAXI or a private operator but the latter can't use the advantages of taxi because there are not regulated. Their price can be lower but it is best to agree upon it before starting the journey. They may be used safely for very specific journeys such as to and from the airport for an agreed price but it is not wise to hail them from the street. TAXI’s do have official recognition and also can use traffic lanes designated only for the city transport system.

It is unfortunately true that some taxi services have left a bad impression on tourists so therefore if you keep to the following advice, you should have a pleasant experience during your visit to Prague:

  1. Call your taxi through the dispatching number and only use a reliable company. You should not have to pay a premium charge for this and if you leave behind your bag or mobile phone in the taxi for example, there is a good chance that you will get them back.
  2. Better not to hail a taxi from the street because you never know who it may be. In that case that you do, expect the price to be more than fare tariff.
  3. Find out in advance, for example from your hotel, how much the journey should approximately cost and eventually let them call for you.
  4. If you don't want to or cannot call the taxi through the dispatching number, you can use the Taxi Fair Place stand. At the Fair Place Stands are controllers who guarantee a fair price, a safe trip, a professional attitude from the drivers and a high level of assigned service. These Taxi Fair Stands are recognizable by only having yellow taxis which have air-conditioning and these vehicles must be less than eight years old.  At the moment in Prague there are 49 of these Taxi Fair Place stands each with its own controller and operator who guarantee the maximum price per kilometer may not be more than CZK 28,- set by the city fathers of Prague.
  5. Ask for a receipt. You should always request a receipt, although the driver is supposed to do so without be asked
