Cabezas de San Juan

The Porta Antillas (East Region) town of Fajardo, Puerto Rico is known for its bioluminescent bay, world-class marina and water sports. Those looking for things to do in Puerto Rico should pay a visit to Cabezas de San Juan, a unique nature preserve run by Para La Naturaleza a unit of the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico.

Cabezas de San Juan encompasses the bio-lagoon, mangrove forests, wetlands, sandy and rocky beaches and a historic working lighthouse. The Conservation Trust offers tours that take visitors through the nature preserve explaining its bio-diversity. Knowledgeable guides transport  guests via trams through the reserve, pointing out interesting sights that allow for ample photo opportunities. There is a walking component to the tour that takes you through the Mangrove forest and around the bioluminescent bay. The bioluminescence is only visible at night however. Guides will point our the different types of mangroves and characteristics of each, you will learn a lot. 

After the trip through the mangroves and bio-bay you are taken to a beautiful rocky beach where you can take additional photos and learn about the area from your guide.

Finally, you are taken up to the working fully restored lighthouse. The lighthouse contains many exhibits including aquariums, artifacts and even the opportunity to touch sea cucumbers and see actual bioluminescence in a darkened room. Up at the lighthouse the views of the northeastern tip of Puerto Rico are magnificent, you can even see the islands of Culebra and Vieques.

Cost of the tour is $10 for Adults and $7 for Children, Students and Seniors. Reservations are required for all tours. Tours last about two hours.
