Sitting on the banks of Gambheri and Berach rivers (a tributary of the Banas) in south east Rajasthan, the city of Chittorgarh is steeped in history. According to fable, Bhim, the legendary character from the ancient Mahabharata Sanskrit, visited this place to learn the secrets of immortality and became a disciple of a sage. Regrettably, his impatience to attain his goal deprived him of it, and in a show of considerable rage he stamped so hard on the ground his footprint became a reservoir - named Bhim Lat in his honour - which can be found next to the fort. This tale and many more is still sung about by local musicians.
There are plenty of sights, such as the mighty Chittorgarh Fort, various palaces, towers and temples, but Chittorgarh is equally renowned for its vibrant shops. Metalwork, woodwork and fabrics are abundant here, as are jutis (embroidered camel-leather shoes) and items of thewa jewellery (gold designs embedded in glass).
Chittorgarh has hot, dry summers and cool winters, so the best time to visit is September through to March. The monsoon rains come during June, July and August.
