Icelandic Fish and Chips OverviewRightfully located next to Reykjavik harbor is the organic bistro Icelandic Fish and Chips. If you are familiar with the traditional meaning of fish and chips you are in for a surprise. Unlike the unhealthy snack so popular in Great Britain and elsewhere their fish and chips menu is organic and much healthier.
Their batter is made from spelt and barley, giving it a unique lightness and crispness, as well as various health benefits from the complex carbohydrates in the grains. Their potato chips (not fried to ensure health benefits and taste) are made by hand in their kitchen just like the homemade dressing they call “skyronnaise” that is in part made from the Icelandic dairy product Skyr.
The menu is very cleverly setup in a way that each customer makes his own combination of fish, chips and side items. That way you are not limited by pre selected combinations. If you are not sure what to pick the staff will gladly help you pick a good blend.
Daily there are 3-4 types of fish available, such as cod, haddock, blue Lang, Monkfish, Halibut, Catfish and Ling cod. Besides the homemade chips there is a different but very tasty selection side items like Green salad, Mango salad, onion rings and Frittatas trio (fried zucchini, broccoli and cauliflower).
The homemade dressing, Skyronnaise, is essentially cheese curds but has the texture of Greek yogurt. The dressing is extremely low in fat and filled with vitamin D. Those unique features come from the Icelandic Skyr that makes up the foundation of the dressing they so brilliantly call Skyronnaise. There are 10 varieties of Skyronnaise on the menu, including basil & garlic as well as ginger and wasabi version.
Icelandic Fish and Chips is a casual restaurant so there is no need for dressing up before visiting. If you are planning to go on a whale watching tour from Reykjavik harbor then this is a perfect place to charge your batteries before or after your tour as it is located just a stone’s throw from the harbor. |

July 2011 Not very impressed, sadly.
Markus from Stockholm
I had the redfish and a side order of garlic potatoes. The only really good thing I can say about the food is that the fish was cooked to perfection but sadly it was very bland and tastless. Nice crust though but it need more taste...
The potatoes were close to inedible because they were burned and very chewy.
The real nice thing of the place was the girls who worked there. Very nice and polite and always a smile on their faces. But, alas, it is a restaurant and you come for the food.

May 2010 Fantastic!

As someone who finds traditional fish 'n chips too heavy and greasy this place is absolutely wonderful.Best fish and "chips" I've had for years! And reasonably priced as well, which is certainly not the case everywhere in Reykjavik.
Go visit!

March 2010 Heaven on a plate!
Gill Lee from London
Forget the miserable, soggy, greasy items you are usually presented with in an English F&C shop. This is the food of the gods. The fish is the freshest you will ever taste and the light, crispy spelt batter melts in the mouth. Add in the golden potatoes and delicious skyronnaise and this is a meal fit for royalty. A really cool place for a quick lunch or a pre-party evening meal. My mouth is watering as I type - roll on our next visit!
