Hornid (e. The Corner)

Reykjavik

Italian

Their seafood gratin is one of the best meals I've ever had in Reykjavik.

If there is one thing you'll discover about the culinary culture in Iceland while you're here, it's the fact that Icelanders love Italian food. That all started in 1979, when Hornid became the first Italian restaurant in Iceland. Today, more than 30 years later, the place looks exactly the same and no changes have been made. It's located in a yellow house on a busy pedestrian corner close to the harbour in central Reykjavik. The decor inside is relaxed and warm, blue and yellow being the main colors, fig plants in the big windows, decently spaced tables and warm terracotta tiles on the floor. The ambiance is lovely, welcoming and quite romantic. It's also great for people-watching.

Even though it's an Italian-style restaurant, there is way more to the menu than just Italian food. They have great soups, and pride themselves in serving the best seafood soup in the city, creamy and filled with delicacies from the sea. The menu features a few other seafood dishes, such as the ovenbaked salmon with garlic shrimps, basil oil and vegetables, and the grilled salted cod with risotto and yougurt-mint sauce. If you want to try the famous Icelandic lamb, you can order the fillet of lamb with vegetables, sundried tomatoes and demi glace. There's a great selection of pasta dishes and pizzas. Try the „Tagliatelle alla Pescatora', pasta with mussels, shrimps & fish of the day, or the „Pizza Roma' with pepperoni, blue cheese, pineapple and green peppercorns. You can't leave without having delicious Panna Cotta for dessert - Italian cream pudding with blueberry skyr.

Hornid known for being the place where you can enjoy a delightful meal made from fresh ingredients in a cozy and inviting environment. The location is great, the decor is beautiful and the food has been consistantly great for over 30 years. What more could you want?
