For many centuries, Icelanders have been depending on sheep to provide wool for warm knitted garments that helped endure the long cold winters. Therefore, knitting, once foremost a necessity, is still a pastime for many and highly appreciated craftsmanship.
Back in 1977, a few Icelandic women, who had used their knitting to supplement family incomes, decided to join forces. The aim was to establish an organization that could facilitate better and more extensive marketing of their products. The Handknitting Association was born.
Soon after it was established, the Association opened a store to sell members woolen merchandise. Today, the store is a flourishing business in its own right and has been joined by two more stores.
After more than 30 years of operation, the Handknitting Association is renowned for its excellent products and quality. Offering the widest selection of traditional hand knitted Icelandic sweaters, the range of products also includes special designs and a variety of woolen products from leading Icelandic manufactures.
Naturally, with thousands of still active knitters, the main store is the main source of Icelandic wool, patterns and supplies in Reykjavik.
