Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre in Reykjavik is a relatively new structure that officially opened on May 4th in 2011 with an opening concert. Harpa was designed by the Danish firm Henning Larsen Architects in co-operation with Olafur Eliasson, an Icelandic artist.

It began as a part of an extensive harbour development project in Reykjavik. The overall objective of the project is to expand and revitalize Reykjavik's eastern harbour and generate life in the area, to enhance the connection between the city centre and the harbour. The building has already become a significant icon in the city, despite it's young age.

The Icelandic State and the City of Reykjavik set out to create a strong cultural image, drawing the world's attention to Iceland, and to strengthen the country's position in the international competition in the fields of culture and travel. They wanted to create appropriate facilities to host international cultural events, enrich the Icelandic cultural life and establish international cultural connections, and last but not least, create a first rate facility for the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Needless to say, they did a mighty fine job.

The whole 28.000 square meters of Harpa now stand at the edge of the Reykjavik Harbour with Iceland's biggest concert hall suitable for a broad range of concerts and cultural events, conference centre with meeting facilities and in-house catering and fine restaurants. Harpa is also ideal for exhibitions, promotions, plays, operas and public events. It's open to everyone, always, and you should definitely visit Harpa, whether it's for a show, a concert or a lovely dinner in one of the fabulous restaurants.
