Shopping in Rio is a bit of a paradox. Many 'everyday' items are generally more expensive here. Yet, you will find bargains on certain clothing, shoes, musical instruments, arts and crafts and souvenirs. I guess that's why they call it 'shopping'.
For the best bargains on clothes or shoes, head to Centro's downtown pedestrian streets of Rua Uruguaiana, Rua da Alfândega, and Rua Buenos Aires. The weekend street markets offer great deals on crafts and souvenirs including the weekly Hippie Fair in Ipanema. For musical instruments, take the subway to Rua da Carioca via the Carioca station stop.
If grand shopping centers and upscale malls are your preference, Rio certainly doesn't disappoint. There is a shopping center or boutique mall in just about every major neighborhood. Out west in Barra, the Barra Shopping & New York City Center offers over 600 stores and boutique shops plus a myriad of dining and entertainment options. The São Conrado Fashion Mall is a favorite for upscale residents of the south zone, while the traditional neighborhood of Botafogo sports two major centers at the Botafogo Praia and Rio Sul Shopping Centers.
