Scopello Information

Scopello is a small village on the north coast of Sicily that never fails to bring a gasp of delight and offers a quiet retreat. The scenery will blow you away as Scopello is full of colours, rural life and history. It is probably one of the favourites along the gulf of Castellmare and could be an excellent base from which to explore the rocky coastline and surrounding countryside even going as far as the whole gulf of Castellmare. Scopello dates back as far as the 18th century and its name meaning rock ( from the latin scopellum)describes Scopello perfectly as evocative rocks and rocky coast  rising from everywhere and dominating them are two medieval rock towers Faraglioni.

How to get to Scopello

If you are coming from Castellamare del Golfo follow the signpost for Trapani going along the SS 187 ( watch out for the potholes) and exit at the junction for the Zingaro Nature Reserve-Scopello. From Palermo A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway . Also excursions to Scopello are available to book in Castellmare di Gulfo where buses also depart a few times a day towards Scopello.

Things to and see in Scopello

Apart from spending your hot summer days in the cobalt waters of the sea, there are a few other equally appealing options for you to spend your day. Scopello offers an abundance of ideas for trips and visits. You can start by visiting the old tuna station that was closed in the late eighties, but nevertheless remained untouched and open, It has therefore quickly become popular for exploring. Nowadays only a few parts are accessible (we would say the best parts), as there are some superb cliffs and concretes for soaking up the blazing sun or crystal clear water for dunking.

Another great trip to make is Riserva dello Zingaro with its natural "swimming pools",  and uncrowded pebble beaches and sheer cliffs that drop straight into the turquoise sea. The heart Of Scopello is Baglio (bailey/fort) where within its walls you can hide from the sun and refresh yourself with drinks and ice cream or munch on paninis bought from small cafes and buy a few souveniers or ceramics. There is a lovely fountain outside the Baglio and a few steps away there are couple more restaurants and hotels.

We love Scopello and despite every year an ever increasing number of summer visitors arrive in Palermo,  it manages to keep its traditions and charming atmosphere.
