Most people simply pass through Milazzo to get to the Aeolian Islands however there are certainly some interesting sights here if you find yourself here overnight or longer. Milazzo is a seaside town with a lively fishing marina, a rambling old castle and plenty of fantastic places nearby out on Capo Milazzo. Give it a bit of time and you'll probably discover just how much there is to see and do.
Milazzo's seaside location made it hotly contested property for many years – the Greeks, Carthaginians and Aragonese all strived at different times for its occupation. The British based here during the Napoleonic Wars, Garibaldi was also victorious here during his quest to unite Italy and it was also used as a prison in WWI.
Milazzo is located on the north eastern coast about 40 kilometres from Messina. It is located on the Capo Milazzo peninsula. Trains run right along the northern coast connecting Milazzo with Messina in the east right through Palermo to the west. AST buses from the station will take you into the town centre. For those heading to the Aeolian Islands sailings depart frequently and you can simply turn up and get on. Head to lungomare and get your ticket at the quayside. Car rentals are also available in Milazzo if you plan to head on around Sicily from here.
If you have a few hours until your ferry sails then consider walking from the port up to the old town. Here you'll find a handful of churches, stone arches and quaint streets. The castle at the top of the town was constructed in the 13th century and is relatively intact. It contains a keep and old cathedral. Near the castle you'll also find the Dominican Chiesa del Rosario that dates back to 1538 and was once seat of the Inquisition. This part of the old town is particularly lovely and a great place to dine.
The other place to visit in Milazzo is the old maritime quarter known as Vaccarella. It used to be inhabited by fishermen and sailors and contains an old tonnara where tuna were processed, a small harbour, cove, beach and church.

A good place to walk is from Il Faro restaurant down to the Santuario Rupestre di S Antonio where there's a small rock chapel. You can continue from here along the sea to Torre del Palombaro then up to a viewpoint, rockpools where you can swim and along the headland back to the restaurant.
