![]() Shangazi House OverviewBuilt along the foothills of Mount Meru in northern Tanzania, Shangazi House has 10 acres of gardens and woodland with views south and east across Maasailand.
A ten-minute drive takes you up into Arusha National Park, the home to deep calderas and Colobus monkeys (the giraffes to the right were photographed in the park).
The colonial-style main house and 4 outlying cottages provide not only great privacy and comfort, but also the luxury of the cooling breezes coming off the mountain.
Shangazi is the perfect place to explore and experience the mysteries of Africa. Shangazi House Rooms: Originally built as a private home, the main house is spacious and comfortable with a verandah that overlooks a sweeping landscape of flower beds and huge native trees. The four garden cottages sit just to the east of the main house with tranquil views not only of the gardens but also of distant Tanzanian landscapes. The interiors are all done in a traditional African colonial style with many pieces designed and created by local artisans.
Normal capacity is 12 persons in 6 double rooms (four rooms, however, can add an extra bed). The main house has 2 bedrooms with en suite bathrooms. These rooms adjoin and can be opened up into a family suite. The cottages are doubles with a bathroom and a front verandah – three have a fireplace.
The ensuite bathrooms have 2 vanity sinks each, an enclosed shower and a separate enclosed toilet. All cottages & rooms are fitted with luxurious walk in mosquito nets. Hairdryers can be provided upon request.
There is a swimming pool next to the main house (along with a pool bar) and fireplaces in the lounge and dining room for the cool season (June through August). Shangazi House Restaurants & Bars: Besides a wonderful sense of privacy, great service, lovely beds, extensive gardens, and gentle savannah winds, you’ll eat delicious, freshly cooked cuisine made with locally produced ingredients, including vegetables from Shangazi’s own gardens.
There is also a full service bar next to the pool, and plenty of special spots both inside the main house and on the verandahs for relaxing, reading, or just taking in the afternoon light.
Internet is available. Phone service also. Laundry services are possible, time permitting.
Safari is a Swahili word that means “long journey.” One of the nicest things about Shangazi House is that you don’t have to make a long trek to see the wild parts of Tanzania. It’s only a 10 minute ride to Arusha National Park, a mountainous and forested sanctuary “island” where juniper forests and water falls are situated along tranquil lakes and forested volcanic rims.
The wildlife here is prolific and relatively easy to find, and includes Colobus monkeys, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, hippo, bushbuck, leopard and an extraordinary bird-life. Hiking and canoeing are easily arranged with fully trained guides, and we can schedule anywhere from an hour or two in the Park up to a full day exploring in our own uniquely designed game viewing vehicles. Shangazi House Facilities: Shangazi is located in Usa River, about half way between Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha, the gateway to the Serengeti.
Set in the shadow of Mount Meru, a part of the volcanic chain that makes up Africa’s famed Rift Valley, the lodge is conveniently close to the amenities of the city, yet still gives one the feeling of living in the traditional African “Bush.”
From Shangazi it’s easy to travel to any number of places, from Kili to Mkomazi to the Ngorongoro crater. |
