Neema Crafts

How to get to Neema Crafts
Neema Crafts Centre is very close to the centre of Iringa Town, just off the main road from Dar-es-Salaam towards Mbeya, (and on to Zambia and Malawi).

On Foot: From the post office, head across the park/gardens straight ahead of you as you stand at the entrance of the Post Office. On the far side take the cut through path beside the D.C.'s office which used to be the old German Hospital ( a very obviously old colonial stone built building). Neema Crafts Centre is the large yellow building with the green roof straight ahead of you the other side of the D.C.'s Office. Alternatively go to the clocktower roundabout near the post office and turn right.

By car: from the main Dar/Mbeya highway, drive up the hill into Iringa town. Turn right at the roundabout at the top of the hill and drive along the dual carriageway until you reach another roundabout with a clock tower on it which is just past the post office. Turn right at this roundabout and you will see Neema Crafts Centre on your left, the 3rd building along. It's a bright yellow building, with verandas along the front and a green roof. Karibu!

Neema Crafts Overview

Founded in 2003 by the Diocese of Ruaha, Neema Crafts provides handicrafts training and much needed employment opportunities for people with disabilities in the Iringa region of Tanzania, and to change negative attitudes towards them in local society. This is a place of creativity, compassion and hope where lives are transformed every day. The centre at Neema also includes a physiotherapy unit for disabled children, an award winning cafe entirely staffed by deaf people, a welcoming guest house which is the first in the world to be run by people with disabilities, a conference room and internet cafe.

The spacious shop in the Neema Crafts Centre in Iringa town stocks all the Neema Crafts range of products. The shop is open six days a week from 9am till 6.30pm and staffed by a team of disabled workers (Daudi and Claude) ably lead by Haruna, whose smile and enthusiasm is etched in the memory of many a visitor to Neema Crafts!

Neema Crafts can also take you on a tour of their workshops to share the stories behind their products, so please try and set aside an extra 15 minutes for your visit. It will be one of the highlights of your time in Tanzania.

Combine your shopping with a visit to the café/restaurant above the shop and take the opportunity to get online at the fast and virus-free internet café or hook up your lap-top to their WiFi network in the Restaurant.

If you are bringing a big group and would like lunch, do let them know in advance and they will be happy to take your food order before you arrive to save time and to reserve seating for you in their restaurant.

The Internet Cafe also hosts a tourist information centre giving information on local tourist opportunities, especially cultural tourism.

Delicious food and wonderful smiling staff

The cakes are to die for and the staff are just delightful. Do not miss visiting Iringa craft centre. The new B&B will be fantastic too. Although I have not stayed there yet the location is quiet and the staff so friendly.

A MUST VISIT PLACE!!! This beautiful cafe, shop and guest house not only provides you with great things to eat and buy, behind the scenes it's changing lives of deaf and disabled people in the region. You can go on a tour of the workshop and meet the individuals who are employed here as well as listening to some of their stories. It's an experience you won't forget - make sure you leave time and room to squeeze in a home-made ice-cream or cake!
