Vienna State Opera

Vienna

Operas All Top Attractions INSIDER TIPS

A defenite MUST to visit! The repertoire of the State Opera covers an impressive cross-section of the full spectrum of operatic literature. Top international performers, directors and stage designers enjoy presenting their art before an expert and VERY critical Viennese audience. Rarely do you hear 'Buhhhh' sounds after an unfortunate premiere so mercylessly and loudly as in Vienna!

World famous Musicians have set the tone as directors of this opera - such as Gustav Mahler (1897 - 1907), Herbert von Karajan (1956 - 1964) and Claudio Abbado (1986 - 1991).

The opera was built between 1863 and 1869 as one of the first prestigious buildings on the then newly-created Ringstraße. It was originally very criticised by the locals but has grown on them over the centuries. Today it is one of the landmarks in Vienna.

Tickets are difficult to get - especially if you have not reserved way in advance. Your last resort is always the concierges at different 5 star hotels in the city centre. But be prepared to go well into the 100s of euros per ticket!

INSIDER TIP: Another option is the 'Stehplatz' (you will be able to watch the performance standing up, rather than sitting down). This is a unique way for students and less affluent Viennese to enjoy exquisite performances while only paying 3 or 4 Euros. Be aware that ticket sales for these tickets start 80min before the show begins, it is one ticket per person (so all the ones ready to go have to join the line) and, if the show is top-class, you will have to queue up for quite a while before the ticket sales start!
