Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
Wellington
Set aside some time to explore Bush City, a recreated bush habitat that you can walk through. By the small waterfall you'll see rocks up to 530 million years old.
Wellington's most iconic and celebrated institution, Te Papa Tongarewa (Maori for 'container of treasures') is New Zealand's national museum. With the prestigious appointment as the cultural figurehead of New Zealand, Te Papa strives to be, and succeeds as, a world-class tourist attraction.
Te Papa's collections span five areas: History, Art, Maori, Pacific and Natural Environment. Each exhibition at Te Papa aims to be interdisciplinary and interactive with an acute emphasis on education through innovation and, crucially, fun.
The permanent exhibitions tell the story of New Zealand: the geology, natural environment, and the people. Indeed, Te Papa serves as a visual and interactive encyclopaedia for New Zealand; its films, pictures, displays and games examine what New Zealand once was, and what it now is, today. It's a real challenge to set foot inside Te Papa and not be enthralled.
A delight for children and an eye-opener for adults, be prepared to spend an entire day within the walls of Te Papa, exploring, learning and having fun.
