Our Locals' Tip: Tokyo is in a great location as it is surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants for you to visit before you go clubbing. It is only a five minute walk to the railway station if you are from out of town.
Tokyo has got all the “bling” that the fresh-faced students want and that long-time York residents have been asking for from their nights for years – it's shiny, hot and totally diverse in its event output – they've already had hip-hop sensation Miss Dynamite, crossover maestros Pendulum and drum 'n' bass powerhouse Chase & Status perform DJ sets there that have in-turn completely packed out the venue with eager smiling faces who are near blown away by the massive Funktion One sound system brought in to "funk" everything up a bit.
There's definitely a unique energy about Tokyo, perhaps because it is exciting for this city, but with new venues recently confirmed for Lincoln and Hull, York's space seems to be a central part of that brand's evolution and of course, it will mean that renowned DJs and artists will no longer look past York when booking tours, and like a domino effect, this will inspire more students and young professionals into the city and boost economy. Great stuff.
The venue was changed following the brand's acquisition of Fibbers on Stonebow and after the company's Business Development Director Nigel Holiday had a desire to really promote York's nightlife and entertainment scene on a national scale.
The venue is perhaps the most dedicated in York to the happiness of students first, with regular nights catering for those studying at York and York St John University respectively; it's always wild, but with the right people around it can be a great night for all concerned. Like all clubs in York, access is fairly simple with a few stairs in, and then down to the club before walking through to the main dance-floor to enjoy some nifty electro, grime, hip-hop and bass-heavy electro tunes as part of the premier Lovedough night (every Friday) which is a staple of Tokyo venues all over the country (and the world). The aforementioned event is particularly "tasty" and it plays host most nights to an emerging or established performer. Indeed, Sub Focus' showing has been acknowledged as a standout moment by many regular attendees from the last year.
All-in-all, Tokyo York not only represents the ultimate clubbing experience, but takes it up to a whole other level; epic raves, reasonably priced drinks (£1.20 before midnight, and £1.60 after), and entry (prices vary depending on the event so check the link below), musicians, dancers, pyrotechnics and aereal acts are standard. This really is a venue with nights that need to be experienced rather than just read and thought about. So, go on!
