Transport - Getting to York

Travelling to York is really simple, because of the city's central location it is easily accessible by Air, Rail and Road.

The Airport closest to York is Leeds Bradford, which is a 45 minute drive away. However Leeds Bradford airport is not connected to the railway station so a car or taxi is needed to transfer to York. See Airport pickups for details. Manchester Airport is a 2 hour drive by road but it does also have the advantage of a direct rail connection to York.  The train can be boarded at the airport terminal and will bring you directly into York within 2 hours, Return tickets are less than £40. Other local airports include Doncaster and Teeside.

York has excellent Rail links to all parts of the country and is only 2 hours by train from Kings Cross station in London. Rail tickets should be bought in advance if possible in order to save money. Click here for special offers and advance purchases.

By Road York is connected to the major Motorway network. From the south travel towards York on the A1 or the M1 leaving the motorway at the A64 intersection. From the North you can also travel on the A1 leaving the motorway on the A64 intersection.

York has a very good Park and Ride system which enables you to park for free in a secure car park and travel into the city by buses which are very frequent. Overnight parking is not allowed .
